loud nightmares
Ooooh looks like Crunchyroll and Funimation is subbing this too. I have no idea if they're using the same translation though. Anyways Crunchyroll is on a one day delay it seems. I would prefer a same day deal but that isn't too bad at all.
Looks like they're using the official English terms too. Which I do sort of like since that's what I'm more used too from my volumes. Survey and Recon do convey the same meaning though. From my understanding "survey" is generally used in a civilian context while "recon" is a military thing. So I suppose Recon would actually fit better. BUT WHATEVER. I'M FINE WITH EITHER. ANYWAY THIS WEEK'S EPISODE BLATHERING:
Wow lots of changes: three scenes are anime original (in a good way!) and lots of things that was presented out of order in the manga are done chronologically here. Which I'm not sure is better but I think it's fine at the very least.
Lots of gore is cut to offscreen, which I mostly like. Seeing tons of people hanging out out of titan's mouths while they're being eaten alive makes for a horrifying story on paper but I think everything the anime adds (sounds, music, motion) does a fine job conveying the same atmosphere without the explicit gore.
;;;;;;;;
Gheugehguh I actually started crying a little here. :(
MAPS. Manga version of the one that was shown in the eyecatch:
ANYWAYS the size of what humanity has left wasn't really properly shown in the map from last week (even with the sizes added, it's too easy to think of it as being literal than symbolic). IT'S A HUGE AREA. There's like a 100km of land between Maria (outermost wall) and Rose (middle). So the biggest loss when Wall Maria was breached, was actually land and more importantly agricultural land, which is why the massive food shortages occurred. The little offshoots are the major towns (like the one circled in pink) and they're outside the wall to be used as bait just because patrolling the entire wall is way impossible because of how huge it is.
AHHH GIANT HOLE IN WALL MARIA. This whole scene was magnificently done eeeeee. And I knew this was coming AND IT STILL HURT SO MUCH. ;;; I'M UPSET. Also I feel terrible for those poor soldiers. The recon corps are the only military group that goes outside the walls, on a regular basis (and they're not totally beloved by everyone for that since they mostly get themselves murdered and drain tax dollars doing it), so they're the only ones that have had actual in person face-to-face titan fighting/killing experience for the last hundred years, unlike Hannes and the rest of the wall guard. And while I'm sure the wall guards know how to fight titans to the best of their ability, it's a whole different psychological thing when actually facing them without any prior experience. :(
;;;;;;;

EREN'S DAD WHY ARE YOU BEING TERRIFYING. ;; This is where the anime started putting things in chronological order. The manga is really weird with flashbacks, they're littered all over the place (things like the eren/mikasa/armin military training coming up next week, the huge food shortages) and I honestly get the feeling that they're like that more to just break up the present day horrors than any really important storytelling reason.
This scene is anime original and I loved it.
MIKASA~~~ ANOTHER ANIME ORIGINAL SCENE AND ALSO GREAT. In the manga it pretty much cut from Eren's "I WILL KILL THEM ALL." to him, Mikasa and Armin graduating from their basic training (with the training itself shown in a bunch of flashbacks). I like actually showing the three of them as children making the decision a lot better.
This was horrifying. Sending out that many people (including Armin's grandfather) on a doomed mission (traveling the 100km to even get to the breach in Wall Maria in titan infested lands is pretty much impossible) just because there wasn't enough food. ;;
TIME SKIP, EVERYONE'S OLDER AND ADORABLE AWWW. Wheeeeee.

Mikasa + short hair = adorable badass.
I also like original anime scene. It's like easter egg.
